CPUOff Version 4.1 Released

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

This minor update to CPUOff fixes a bug where the program could freeze if there is a CPU read error. Fixes a bug where trying to start multiple instances of the program with the program set to always run on top caused the error pop up can open beneath the main program window of the first instance. Removes need for the slave to have a licence code. Fixes a bug where a corrupted log file causes a run time error if the log file becomes corrupted while the program is running. Log file now shows date created for new log files. Program now always runs on top during the shut down period.

CPUOff monitors average CPU load and initiates computer shutdown if the CPU load has been below a specified percentage for a specified time. It can be started manually or automatically via the Windows Task Scheduler. The CPU load and many other parameters can be configured via the configuration screen. It can also be used to shutdown a remote computer. Shutdown has been configured to force all running applications to close. CPUOff is part of the JSutils group of software utilities which have a theme of energy conservation. To find more energy saving ideas click on Energy Saving.

Uses of this Freeware program include unattended backup, shutting down the computer when the backup has completed. It can be started via the Windows Task Scheduler at the same time as the backup is initiated. It can also be started manually to allow the computer to shutdown automatically once a CPU intensive task has completed. CPUOff is a great little utility for saving energy by making sure a computer shuts down when it has finished an unattended task.

CPUOff Version 4 Released
CPUOff has been around for about 18 months and is designed to solve the problem of turning off a computer after a task such as an overnight backup has finished enabling a job to be started and left knowing the computer will poweroff after the job has finished. It will even shut down a second computer at the same time. CPUOff supports Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows 2003 and is simple to install. Just download the install file, double click on it, follow the on screen instructions, enter the registration code and if only one computer is used it will probably not need any changes to the configuration.

Version 4.0 introduces several changes to make the program simpler to set up and use plus fix a few small bugs.and improve it’s resilience to network failure when used to shut down a second computer. Configuration is now via a configuration screen rather than manually editing a configuration file. There is now a small program to install on a second computer to enable shutdown if the network fails. It no longer relies on third party software for its operation.

A typical use would be to set the computer to come on at a preset time overnight and start the backup program (backing the software up to an external hard drive) and CPUOff via the Windows task manager. Once the backup has completed the processor load will fall, CPUOff will detect this and after a preset time to check the load hasn’t risen again it will power off the computer. A similar process will work when one computer is backed up to another. It can also be used for other processor intensive tasks such as virus scanning and disk defragmentation.
